Oppressed by religious intolerance in Britain and in other American colonies, pilgrims established several colonies in which religious freedom and tolerance were emphasized. These included the Pennsylvania Colony established by Quakers, the Maryland Colony established by Catholics, and the Rhode Island Colony established by Roger Williams and Puritan dissidents originally from the Massachusetts Bay.
