Thomas Jefferson was elected in 1800 as the third president of the United States. Going against his historical viewpoint that the government should follow a strict interpretation of the Constitution with no implied powers, he negotiated the Louisiana Purchase with Napoleon Bonaparte of France to acquire huge swaths of land for the nascent United States. This territory would be explored later by Lewis and Clark. His presidency was also notable for the Embargo Act blocking trade, which was later repealed by Macon's Bill #2.
