James Monroe was greeted after his inauguration as one of the most loved Presidents. For this reason, Madison's presidency was known as the "The Era of Good Feelings". Notably, Madison was responsible for the annexing of Florida through the Adams-Onis Treaty, and he also guided the country through the economic Panic of 1819. He famously enacted the Monroe Doctrine in 1823, urging European powers to keep out of the North American continent.
