Plymouth and the Massachusetts Bay colonies were the original English colonies in Massachusetts. Plymouth was the earliest English settlement, and was successful in part due to treaties and trade with the nearby Wampanoag Indians. The Massachusetts Bay Colony was formed by Puritan Separatists, and notably was the site of religious dissidents like Anne Hutchinson as well as religious movements like the First Great Awakening.
